Spa Sunday at Cragg Vale

Upper Calder Valley folk had no need to travel far afield to spa towns such as Harrogate, Bath or Buxton to "take the waters".

Right on their very own doorstep at Cragg Vale they had their own local spa, whose reviving waters were recommended by doctors as an instant pick-me-up to the less than hale-and-hearty — and to everyone else simply offered the opportunity for a refreshing free drink.

For many years Spa Sunday at Cragg Vale was an annual tradition, which brought the crowds flocking from all over the Upper Calder Valley, and even further afield.

Although the waters could be taken at any time of the year, the first Sunday in May was considered particularly efficacious, the waters then believed to be infused with greater potency.
