Smoke and Visible Vapour Banned!

"We may soon see motor cars proceeding through the streets of Todmorden.

The new act came into operation on November 11th last. Copies of an order of the Local Government Board for the regulation of these cars have been issued to the various County Councils and highway authorities.

The regulations stipulate that cars shall not emit smoke or visible vapour, and they must be able to travel backwards and forwards and must have brakes powerful enough to stop them within a distance of 50ft, when travelling at the rate of 14 miles an hour.

The latter is the maximum speed allowed under the Act."
